The Suicide Prevention Task Force was founded by Mayor Pro Tem Kasandra A. Gandara in 2016 after a series of completed suicides by youth and a prominent city councilor. It was her intention to bring awareness to the problem, advocate for quality mental health services and most importantly to bring hope to those that feel so alone.

PURPOSE

The Las Cruces Suicide Prevention Task Force (LCSPTF) is a coalition of community members, providers, and advocates working to prevent suicide and promote mental wellness, including addressing the unique link between suicide and substance use disorder (SUD). We raise awareness, provide education and training, foster connection, and influence policy by building strong partnerships across sectors.

VISION

A compassionate and connected community where every life is valued, every person feels supported, and suicide is no longer a leading cause of death.

MISSION

To prevent suicide and promote healing in Doña Ana County by reducing stigma, increasing access to care, supporting survivors, and advancing community-led solutions rooted in hope, equity, and dignity. We are committed to building a community that understands the complex connections between mental health, trauma, and substance use disorder and responds with care, compassion, and resources.

GOALS

●  Educate and Empower:

Provide ongoing training and public education to increase understanding of suicide risk, prevention strategies, substance use disorder, and available supports.

●  Challenge Stigma:

Reduce shame, secrecy, and harmful myths surrounding suicide, mental health challenges, and substance use disorders.

●  Strengthen Partnerships:

Build collaborative relationships with agencies, institutions, and individuals dedicated to suicide prevention, recovery, and mental wellness.

●  Support Survivors:

Offer safe spaces and resources for individuals impacted by suicide, including those who have survived attempts, lost loved ones, or are in recovery from substance use disorder.

●  Advance Systems Change:

Advocate for responsive policies, improved access to care, and legislative initiatives that promote mental health, recovery, and suicide prevention.
